Lore details about the United Nations are still emerging.

The United Nations (UN) in Starship Simulator is the primary interstellar governing body of humanity in the 23rd century. It is depicted as a future, reformed version of the real-world United Nations, overseeing global affairs on Earth and directing humanity's expansion into space, primarily through its operational arm, the United Nations Space Fleet (UNSF).

History (In-Lore)
According to comments made by Dan Govier during development streams, the lore of Starship Simulator includes a significant historical turning point:
* The "Great Reformation" (Working Title): At some point prior to the game's setting (circa 2261 AD), a cataclysmic global event, possibly akin to a "world war 3," led to the dissolution or fundamental crisis of the original United Nations.
* Formation of the New UN: From the aftermath of this event, a newer, reformed United Nations was established. This new body was designed with a different structure, incorporating new checks, balances, and potentially a revised charter to address the challenges of a new era and prevent past mistakes. The specifics of this reformed structure are still being developed.

By the mid-23rd century (around 2261 AD, when the game is set), this reformed United Nations manages global affairs. Humanity is described as having achieved a "post-scarcity society," potentially with universal basic income, which likely underpins the large-scale investment in space exploration initiatives like the UNSF Magellan project [Source: Dev Stream Q&A - approx. March 26, 2024].

Role and Mandate in 2261 AD
In the game's current timeline, the United Nations serves as the supreme governing authority for humanity and has several key mandates:
* Global Governance: Maintaining peace, stability, and cooperation between nations and blocs on Earth and any established off-world colonies.
* Space Exploration & Expansion: Directing and funding the United Nations Space Fleet in its primary mission to explore the Milky Way galaxy, conduct scientific research, seek out habitable worlds, and make peaceful first contact with alien civilizations.
* Resource Management & Development: Likely overseeing the ethical and sustainable development of off-world resources for the benefit of humanity.
* Interstellar Diplomacy: Representing humanity as a unified entity in interactions with any encountered extraterrestrial species.
* Addressing Internal Dissent: The UN's agenda for space exploration is not universally supported. Factions such as the "Society for the Preservation of Humanity" (SPH) actively oppose these endeavors and may act to sabotage UNSF missions [Source: Dev Stream Q&A - approx. March 20 & 26, 2024]. Dealing with such internal pressures would also fall under the UN's purview.

Structure and Governance
While detailed specifics are yet to be revealed, the reformed United Nations likely features:
* A representative body for member states/regions of Earth and potentially early off-world settlements.
* Specialized councils or agencies dedicated to interstellar affairs, scientific advancement, and space fleet oversight.
* The "new checks and balances" mentioned by developers, aimed at ensuring stability and effective governance in an era of interstellar reach.

Relationship with the UNSF
* The United Nations Space Fleet operates as the primary exploratory, scientific, and potentially defensive arm of the United Nations in space.
* The UNSF executes missions and directives issued by UN civilian authorities and is accountable to them.
* The Captain and crew of vessels like the UNSF Magellan are officers and personnel of the UNSF, acting under the UN's broader mandate.

Development Notes
The detailed political structure, historical events leading to its reformation, and specific interactions with the in-game United Nations are part of the ongoing lore development for Starship Simulator.
