An unoccupied Power System Console aboard a Magellan Class vessel

The Power Systems Console is one of the engineering stations on a bridge. Manned by a member of the engineering department, it is used to monitor the starship's Fusion Reactor and utilities needed for them like the Cryogenic Storage. The station is primarily used to relay information to bridge crew and help command crew control their operations.

Location and Layout

The interface for the Power Systems Console in dev build 0.227.0.20

On a Magellan Class vessel, the Power Systems Console is located in the aft-starboard alcove found behind the Command Chairs. It is located on to the left of the Propulsion Systems Console, both of which are positioned on the starboard side of the entry doorway. Both consoles are closest to the Command Chairs and Tactical Stations.

The power systems console consists of one pane which displays an overview of the starship's fusion reactor and cryogenic tanks.

  • Fusion Reactor: displays the power output and inflow/outflow of supplies into the Fusion Reactor. The console also controls the power output, allowing the bridge to either increase or decrease this.
  • Cryogenic Storage: displays the contents of cryotanks holding the supplies of materials vital to the fusion reactor, notably Helium-3, Helium-4 and Deuterium. The console displays the status of the tank and the amount of time until they are depleted of their contents. The console can also control whether the valves of the ship are open, allowing them to be refuelled whilst orbiting a Gas Giant or other sources of the material.

Gameplay

The power systems console is used to control the output of the fusion reactor. Using it, the user can increase and decrease to input of the reactor, affecting how much power the ship will receive. However, it cannot take the system through the startup process from a Cold & Dark Start or order a shutdown, with these needed to be taken through the Fusion Reactor Controls in the Reactor Room.

The controls for the Cryotanks affect whether the tanks' valves are open or shut. There are three controls for the different tanks and manage whether the ship is refuelling whilst orbiting a gas or ice giant. The console controls each tank separately, allowing each to be refuelled at different points. However, it does not control the inflow into the reactor, which is managed from the pumps in Cryogenic Storage.

Orders

The following orders can be given from the Captain to a crew member assigned to the Power Console:

  • Open Refuel Valves: Valves for Helium, Helium-3 and Deuterium tanks are opened, beginning the refuelling process at either a gas or ice giant.
  • Close Refuel Valves: Valves for Helium, Helium-3 and Deuterium tanks are closed, stopping the refuelling process at either a gas or ice giant.

Shipwide Orders

The following shipwide orders will be carried out at the Power Console:

  • Refuel the Ship: The operator will need to open the fuel tanks at a gas or ice giant to collect needed materials from their atmosphere or surface.

Development

As one of the aft alcoves, the power systems console was first implemented onto the bridge in dev build 0.226.0.19. Function for the console and commands for the station were first implemented in dev build 0.227.0.21, notably their control of the cryotanks and their ability to change the output of the reactor.
