This page defines the standard terminology used for directions relative to the Magellan Class starship's orientation in Starship Simulator. Consistent use of these terms is important for clear communication regarding navigation, location references, and ship operations. These directions are based on traditional nautical and aerospace conventions, defined along the ship's three primary axes: longitudinal (bow-stern), lateral (port-starboard), and vertical (dorsal-ventral).

Aft

Aft refers to the direction towards the stern (rear end) of the starship.

Reference Point: The Stern.
Axis: Along the longitudinal axis, opposite to Forward.
Usage: Indicates locations or movement towards the back of the ship.

Forward

Forward refers to the direction towards the bow (front end) of the starship.

Reference Point: The Bow.
Axis: Along the longitudinal axis, opposite to Aft.
Usage: Indicates locations or movement towards the front of the ship.

Port

Port refers to the left side of the starship when facing Forward.

Reference Point: Defined relative to facing Forward.
Axis: Relates to the ship's lateral axis.
Usage: Used to indicate locations, movements, or bearings to the left side of the ship's centerline.

Starboard

Starboard refers to the right side of the starship when facing Forward.

Reference Point: Defined relative to facing Forward.
Axis: Relates to the ship's lateral axis.
Usage: Used to indicate locations, movements, or bearings to the right side of the ship's centerline.

Dorsal

Dorsal refers to the direction towards the "top" or "back" surface of the starship, relative to its typical horizontal orientation in space or its structural design.

Reference Point: The conceptual top surface of the ship.
Axis: Along the vertical axis, opposite to Ventral.
Usage: Indicates locations or movement towards the top side of the ship.

Ventral

Ventral refers to the direction towards the "bottom" or "belly" (keel) of the starship, relative to its typical horizontal orientation.

Reference Point: The conceptual bottom surface / keel.
Axis: Along the vertical axis, opposite to Dorsal.
Usage: Indicates locations or movement towards the bottom side of the ship.

Inboard

Inboard refers to the direction towards the centerline or central axis of the starship, away from the outer hull.

Reference Point: The ship's centerline.
Axis: Along the lateral axis, opposite to Outboard.
Usage: Indicates locations or movement towards the middle of a deck or the ship itself.

Outboard

Outboard refers to the direction towards the outer hull or sides of the starship, away from the centerline.

Reference Point: The ship's outer hull.
Axis: Along the lateral axis, opposite to Inboard.
Usage: Indicates locations or movement away from the middle of a deck towards the ship's sides.
