Door Keypad Tutorial

This guide explains how to use the standard keypads found next to many doors aboard the Magellan Class starship in Starship Simulator. These keypads allow for manual operation, mode changes, and security locking of doors.

Interaction

To operate a keypad:

  • Position your view so the cursor is over the desired button on the keypad screen.
  • Press Left Mouse Button to activate the button.
  • You can hold the E key to activate a movable mouse cursor overlay, which may make selecting specific buttons easier.

Basic Operation

Most keypads feature prominent OPEN and CLOSE buttons.

  • Pressing OPEN manually opens the associated door.
  • Pressing CLOSE manually closes the associated door.

These buttons are primarily used when the door is in Manual Mode or after it has been unlocked via Security Mode.

Status Icons

Located at the bottom of the keypad screen, two icons indicate the door's current status:

  • Door Icon (Left): Indicates the operational mode.
  • Green: Door is in Auto Mode.
  • Red: Door is in Manual Mode.
  • Key Icon (Right): Indicates the security lock status.
  • Green: Door is Unlocked. No security PIN is required to operate the door.
  • Red: Door is Locked. A security PIN must be entered via the Security Mode screen to unlock the door before it can be opened.

Mode Selection

It appears clicking the Status Icons (Door, Key) or potentially other indicated areas at the bottom cycles through different setting screens for the keypad: Door Mode, Privacy Mode (if available), and Security Mode.

Door Mode (Auto/Manual)

This mode controls whether the door opens automatically or requires manual activation.

  • Auto Mode: (Indicated by Green Door Icon) The door uses proximity sensors and will open automatically when someone approaches, then close after a short delay.
  • Manual Mode: (Indicated by Red Door Icon) The door does not use proximity sensors. You must press the OPEN and CLOSE buttons on the keypad to operate it.
  • Switching: On the "DOOR MODE" screen, press the AUTO or MANUAL button to select the desired mode.

Privacy Mode

  • Availability: This feature is only available on certain doors leading into sensitive areas (e.g., offices, quarters) and typically only accessible from the keypad inside the room.
  • Function: When enabled, Privacy Mode makes any transparent panels on the door semi-opaque (applying a "frosted glass" effect) to prevent visual observation into the room.
  • Operation: On the "PRIVACY MODE" screen, use the ENABLE and DISABLE buttons to toggle the mode on or off. The screen displays "PRIVACY MODE: ON" or "PRIVACY MODE: OFF".

Security Mode (Lock/Unlock)

This mode allows the door to be locked with a numerical PIN code.

  • Locking Process:
  • Navigate to the Security Mode screen (showing the number pad).
  • Enter a desired PIN code using the number buttons. (Note: Currently, setting custom PINs may not be fully implemented; default or universal codes might apply, or the feature may be pending full implementation).
  • Press the LOCK button.
  • The door will close (if open), the proximity sensor will deactivate (effectively putting it in Manual Mode), and the Key Icon will turn Red. The screen may display "DOOR LOCKED".
  • Unlocking Process:
  • Navigate to the Security Mode screen.
  • Enter the correct PIN code using the number pad.
  • Press the UNLOCK button.
  • If the PIN is correct, the Key Icon will turn Green, and the screen may display "DOOR UNLOCKED".
  • The door controls (OPEN/CLOSE) are now active again. You will likely need to press OPEN to enter, as the door remains in a manual state after unlocking.

Future Plans

The developers have indicated plans to implement more detailed access control in the future, potentially including:

  • Different access levels based on crew role (e.g., Command, Engineering, Security overrides).
  • Default PIN codes for specific departments or areas.
  • Customizable PIN codes.

As of the current development phase, these features may not yet be fully implemented.
