Tutorial:Issuing Commands

From Starship Simulator

This page is a Work in Progress as much of the lore/Development for the game is yet to be established.

Build Compatibility: This tutorial was last verified for Build 0.277.0.8. If you notice discrepancies in a newer version, please update the guide or flag it for review.

This tutorial explains how to Issue Commands to crewmembers in Starship Simulator

Overview

From build 0.277.0.8 the method for issuing commands was moved to the Radial Menu. Prior to this a simple Pop up UI was used.

The development of NPC activity is a work in progress and so specific actions associated with commands noted here are inevitably going to slip out (or maybe back in) of use over time, especially those related to the functions of the Holo-Display.

The display itself can better be regarded as a Command tool, which means getting Stations around the Bridge to constantly change the display for convenience might prove inefficient when Commanders themselves might in future perform actions directly on it without needing inputs from around the Bridge, e.g., zooming in or out on star systems, selecting targets, plotting courses, etc. Equally, space on the Radial Menus will probably prove to be at a premium as each Station acquires more functions, thus causing a natural separation between Command functions and Bridge Stations' focus upon their own areas of expertise.

Players should remain alert to the many updates likely to surround issuing of commands.

How to Issue Commands

1. Accessing Radial Menus

  • approach a station (chair) on the Bridge, (the distance the player is from the Chair will determine what options are available)
  • once you are hovering the cursor over the station it will become highlighted if an action is possible; press the Radial Menu Key (Default: F)

2. Using Command Interfaces

General points:

  • upon interaction with an interface, a context aware Radial Menu will appear relatively to the station, for commands that can be issued depending upon the player's department/role
  • the mouse can be moved elsewhere around the screen while a menu is visible
  • visible options can be selected freely
  • when an option is selected the task is actioned by NPCs sequentially, i.e., after precedent tasks are complete
  • some orders can override others, e.g., a "cancel" order
  • for more details on UI interaction, see Tutorial:Interaction Basics

Issuing Commands (Overview)

While playing as a Command role using the menus, the player can typically perform functions such as:

General
  • spawn or dismiss NPCs
Helm
  • command Helm to travel to sensors and command targets
  • require NPCs to engage and disengage the FTL drive
  • instruct NPCs to take the ship home (Earth)
  • command NPCs to Disengage the FTL Drive
Sensors Station
  • instruct the Sensors NPC to switch between sensors operating modes
  • set the Sensors NPC general search projects, such as finding Earth-like planets or tech signatures
    • require Sensors NPC to align the ship to a target (must have relevant system targetted on the Holo-Display)
    • get the Sensors NPC to revert the Holo-Display to overview mode, among others
  • Initiate Surveys:
    • scan Target
    • show Surface Map
