Hello, I'm known by my Discord user name, which is Gatehouse. You can think of me as a Copy Editor on the site.
Although I am an editor here I do not usually get involved with writing new content. My role is to bring the site's written 'copy' into line with our style guidelines, occasionally stray into a bit of proofreading and generally make the whole thing more readable. Perhaps a good summary is one an A.I. provided me:
I improve written material by correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax errors, while ensuring consistency, clarity, and adherence to house style. I refine flow, verify facts, check for legal issues like libel, and ensure content is ready for publication.
That covers a multitude of sins and yet does not say much about how this works out in practice on this Wiki.
How may I help you?
A Wiki is by definition for enthusiasts to add their voluntary contributions relating to subjects about which they are, well... enthusiastic. Few of us are professional publishers or writers and even if we are, we have our own copy editors and publishing houses looking over our shoulders, doubtless checking up on the way they do things. We on the other hand have a pretty hands-off method. Sometimes too, potential writers are put off by thinking everyone around them is going to criticise or think less of them for their efforts. Do not be. Volunteer through the Starship Simulator Discord channel and just get started.
In my role I am probably going to stumble over your efforts in any case; however, that does not mean you cannot bring me into the conversation before you actually publish something. If you want me to look it over beforehand, or even query any changes I've made post hoc then feel free to lean on me using the discussion link in your user profile. I am glad to help. Don't think I merely confine myself to grammar and syntax and all the basics, either. I'm just as interested in the game itself and the things that our Wiki says.
A tiny bit about me
I have never been employed as a full time copy editor, nevertheless have done the job semi professionally in at least one of my jobs for several years, bringing our work to written publication and managing the production of a website. I wrote that in order to reassure that I know what I'm talking about, obviously; however, none of us is perfect, so don't get the idea I'm the in-house expert! We simply do our best. What I am though, is:
- a Starship Simulator enthusiast who is interested in seeing the game develop to its full potential and most of all I'm just someone who will enjoy playing it
- a game Backer at the Commodore tier
- an individual who has always had a deep love of the English language in both its spoken or written expression
