Maintenance Tunnels

From Starship Simulator

Maintenance Tunnels are passageways on the lower decks of a Magellan Class starship. They are used by the Engineering department to access core systems and locations needed to supply the ship's functions. The maintenance tunnels can be accessed using entrances on E, F and G Decks.

Layout

Maintenance tunnels primarily consist of metal framework and insulation mesh. Metal walkways serve as the primary flooring, connected to the deck's transversal frames for support. Barriers are placed around the walkways to prevent falling accidents. Ceiling above the tunnels does not exist, exposing air ventilation and other systems to easier access. Lighting can be found around the tunnels, extended over the walkways from the framework.

The tunnels run around the outer rooms of the ship. On F and G Decks, they are circular akin to the ring corridors. Several straight tunnels connect the outer ring corridors and stairways leading to decks. On D and E Decks the tunnels will primarily be connected to isolated systems such as the Alcubierre Drive, weapon arrays and RTS thrusters. The design is intended to allow engineers unimpeded access to the ship's more sensitive systems during periods of intense activity in the regular corridors, also to facilitate better safety standards and isolation when working with critical systems and services.

Features

On F Deck, the Maintenance Tunnels house Battery Array Aggregator panels. These connect each battery room to the Deck Distributor Panels in the Reactor Room, distributing power to all seven decks on the ship. When starting the Magellan-class from a Cold & Dark state, engineers must switch these on to provide power to the ship's deck systems.
