Passenger
A passenger is a member of personnel not associated with the starship's crew. They are often travelling on the ship from one destination to another or staying aboard the ship during its travels. Passengers are considered members of the civilian department, meaning they have no obligations to performing tasks or operations aboard the starship.
Responsibilities
Aboard a starship, a passenger holds no responsibilities related to ship tasks and operations. They are expected to travel on the ship either from one destination to another, for a specified amount of time or indefinitely. As such, a passenger is expected to simply use facilities aboard the ship for recreation. They will very likely be granted quarters to use for sleep and other purposes, possibly including staterooms.
Despite their status, a passenger is expected to follow the ship's code of conduct and laws. This likely includes their actions aboard the ship and, if allowed, on other planets. Due to security and safety concerns, they are also limited in access to locations critical to ship systems, such as the bridge or the Fusion Reactor, and will not be allowed to interact with certain ship systems.
Primary Location and Access Level
On a Magellan Class starship, a passenger is currently expected to have access only to B Deck, including the VIP Lounge and Staterooms. It's assumed that they will also have access to other facilities around the ship, such as the Mall and its facilities. However, it is expected that passenger access will be limited due to security and safety procedures. Those that disobey rules and orders may be confined to the Brig until they reach their destination or the end of their travel period.
Key Interactions
Passengers are not expected to utilise or affect any ship systems a starship. However, they are expected to utilise recreational facilities in their designated areas, such as the Pool Table, Chess Board and Piano in the VIP Lounge. They are also granted quarters where they will be able to use facilities provided, whether it be a bed to sleep or kitchen to prepare their own meals.
Personnel
Passengers will likely interact with the Captain and other senior members of crew, depending on their journey requirements and role aboard the ship. It's likely that they will be able to affect the course of transport by requesting the captain visit certain destinations, but the chance of visiting it will be determined by the commanding officer's judgement. Current systems are unknown, especially if a passenger is caught in a restricted area by a member of crew.
Gameplay Focus
Playing as a passenger is expected to revolve around player enjoyment and the lack of duties aboard the ship. It is also expected to be a more passive role compared to other shipbound positions. Key gameplay elements will include:
- Travelling on the ship until they reach their intended destination or travel period
- Lacking duties or any tasks to perform aboard the ship
- Awareness of ship security and safety protocols, including restriction
Notes
- The term passenger was previously used to describe the department that the role is part of: the civilian department. The term is still used to refer to it during development.
