NOTICE: This page is a Work in Progress as much of the lore/Development for the game is yet to be established.
Overview
This tutorial covers the fundamental ways you, as a crew member or passenger, interact with the environment, objects, and interfaces in Starship Simulator. Mastering these basics is essential for operating ship systems and navigating the detailed world of Starship Simulator
For a full list of keybinds, always refer to the main Controls page.
Interaction with the world within the game is primarily done with two Inputs. The Radial Menu key (default F) and the Action key (default LMB).
Action Key
The Action Key will allow the user to interact with UI panels, Pick up objects and select Menu Items. The actions that will be performed will be Context Sensitive.
How To Use
There are 2 options for using the action key.
- Using the HUD Crosshair/Reticle
- Position yourself in front of the Screen/Console, Object/Prop or Menu/UI you wish to use.
- Align the HUD Crosshair/Reticle with the target element that needs interacting with.
- Press the Action Key to activate the highlighted element.
- Unlocking the Mouse Cursor
- Position yourself in front of the Screen/Console, Object/Prop or Menu/UI you wish to use.
- Press and hold the Mouse Cursor Unlock key (default
E). This will display your mouse cursor on the screen. - While holding
E, move the mouse cursor over the desired button, slider, text field, or menu option on the screen. - Click the Left Mouse Button to activate the highlighted element (press a button, select an option, place cursor in text field, etc.).
- Release the
Ekey to return to normal view/movement mode.
- Notes:
- The action performed depends entirely on the object you are looking at. Pay attention to the on-screen prompt!
- The Zoom Key (Default key
RMB) can be used to easily see a screen or pick out an object. The Zoom Percentage can be adjusted in the Accessibility Tab of the Main Menu. The Zoom Key must be pressed and Held before the Mouse Cursor Unlock key is Pressed to keep the zoom level locked in.
Context Awareness
On some particular in-game objects, using the Action Key can open the Radial Menu if the context of interacting with the object/element requires it. For example; Using the Action Key on an empty bridge chair will cause the player to sit in the chair; however, if the player uses the Action Key while the bridge chair is occupied with an NPC, the Radial menu is opened as the default action is not applicable.
Radial Menu Key
The Radial Menu Key will allow the user to interact with NPCs and interact with Object/Props via a Radial Menu. The actions that will be performed will be Context Sensitive and different menu items will be generated within the menu structure.
How To Use
- Open the Menu and selecting options
- The Radial Menu Key (Default
F) can be pressed at any time during the general gameplay to bring up the Radial Menu. - Use the Action Key to select a menu item.
- Closing the Menu
- Press the Radial Menu Key again or use the Action Key on the Cancel icon in the centre of the menu.
Types of Menu Options
- Open Sub Options
- These options when selected will change the current Radial Menu for a new Sub Menu with new options related to the item selected.
- Example of this type of option would be a Sub Option to open the Emote Sub Menu
- Command & Close
- These options when selected will issue a command and Close the Menu.
- Example of this type of Command would be a Command to "Explore This System". The Menu is closed as the order is considered fully Issued.
- Command & Continue
- These options when selected will issue a command and Keep the Menu Open waiting for further commands.
- Example of this type of Command would be a Command to "Zoom In" in the sensors station Radial Menu section. The Menu is kept open as the order is considered to be not fully complete so further instructions may be queued.
- Command & Open Sub Options
- These options when selected will issue a command and will change the current Radial Menu for a new Sub Menu with new options related to the item selected.
- Example of this type of Command would be a Command "Long Range Mode" which will command the Sensors NPC to change to Long Range Mode but will open a Sub Menu for further instructions.
- Return to Parent Menu
- Labelled as the Back button and set to be located at the top of the Radial Menu. This will be displayed in any sub menu (any menu below the top Menu) and will take you back 1 step in the menu system.
- Will not be available in the Top Menu as there will be no menu to go back to, so the top space will be replaced with another menu item.
- Close Menu
- Labelled as Cancel, this element will close the Radial Menu.
Context Awareness
The Radial Menu will have different options based on context. As such, the menu options may change based on the following conditions:
- In Focused Object - An object highlighted with the Crosshair or Mouse Cursor may bring up a menu with options only relevant to the highlighted object.
- Player's Department/Rank - The player's department and/or rank will either unlock or hide options that are relevant to or restricted by their position.
- Player's Location - The player's physical location within the game world (on ship, on planet, in shuttle) may change the options within the menu.
Summary
Mastering the Radial Menu Key for Radial Menu interactions and the Mouse Cursor Unlock key + Action Key for UI/Object interactions will allow you to operate most systems and objects effectively aboard the ship. Refer to specific system Tutorials for more advanced operational details.
