Sol is the proper designation for the home star of Humanity, located at the centre of the Sol System. Known colloquially as "the Sun", it is a stable main-sequence star vital for the existence of life on Earth.

Characteristics

Sol is classified as a G2V star:

  • G: Indicates it is a yellow main-sequence star, falling within the temperature range of approximately 5,200 K to 6,000 K (surface temperature ~5,778 K).
  • 2: The sub-division indicates it is relatively hot within the G-class spectrum (hotter than G3...G9).
  • V: The luminosity class signifies it is currently on the Main Sequence (a "dwarf" star), actively fusing hydrogen into helium in its core.

As a typical G-type star, Sol is relatively common in the Milky Way galaxy. It possesses characteristics considered highly favourable for the development of life on orbiting planets:

  • Stability: Provides a consistent energy output over long timescales.
  • Lifespan: Has a total main-sequence lifespan estimated at around 10 billion years (currently about 4.6 billion years old in 2261 AD), offering ample time for planetary evolution.
  • Habitable Zone: Possesses a well-defined Habitable Zone where Earth resides, allowing for the presence of surface liquid water.

Role in Sol System

Sol is the gravitational anchor of the Sol System, holding Earth and all other planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets in orbit around it. Its energy output dictates the temperature zones within the system, including the boundaries of the Habitable Zone, the Frost Line, and the inner Lava Line / Dust Sublimation Line. It is the primary source of light and heat for all bodies within the system.

In-Game Representation

In Starship Simulator, Sol is the central star players start near when beginning their journey from the Sol System.

  • It can be targeted and scanned using the ship's Sensors, providing specific data (a descriptive text for Sol was added in Build 0.225.0.69).
  • Its position defines the centre of the Sol System simulation space.
  • It provides the primary illumination for planets and objects within the system.
