A laboratory is a room where scientific studies and experiments take place. In the UNSF, they are used by science department to conduct research into astronomical objects, alien lifeforms and other phenomena. On a Magellan Class starship, science labs are hosted on C Deck.

Features

Lab facilities depend on the field of study and their contents. Most are separated into three distict rooms, the main lab area, the storage area and an airlock.

Main Lab

The main lab is used to perform studies and experiments. Their utilities are unknown, but will correlate to the field specialised in the lab. The size of the main lab sometimes varies on the field of study, for example the Astrophysics Lab spans two decks and two room compartments, the Chemistry Lab takes up a larger outer room to accommodate its facilities, whilst the Linguistics Lab features only one compartment on an inner compartment.

Storage

Multiple labs use Storage Rooms to store samples and equipment for the staff to use. They consist of shelves that stretch from one end of the room to another. Storage Rooms can only be accessed from the lab itself to ensure safety, prevent sabotage and unauthorised access.

Airlock

Multiple labs feature an airlock in their entryways. These are used to decontaminate personnel and prevent leaks from the labs, whether it be a biological risk or a chemical experiment gone wrong. The airlocks will also likely contain protective clothing for personnel to wear in the labs to reduce the risk of contaminating experiments.
