Command Chairs

From Starship Simulator
(Redirected from Command Console)
The Command Chairs aboard a Magellan class starship.

The Command Chairs is the primary command station on a starship's bridge. Manned by the Captain, First/Executive Officer or the Officer of the Watch, they serve as the seating area of the commanding officer for the bridge. The chairs feature controls to alter the ship's alert conditions and change the Holo-Display's input to any of the forward bridge stations.

Location and Layout

The Command Chairs are located in aft area of the inner bridge. They face the Helm and forward windows. They are closer to the Sensors Station on their left side and Tactical Stations on their right. Engineering consoles are planned to be stationed behind the Command Chairs in future updates.

The station consists of two chairs and a set of controls between them. The chairs are not labelled for the Captain or First Officer, allowing players to choose where they sit.

There are two interfaces for the station: Holo-Display Command Interface and Alert Condition. Both are located in the centre of the station for both the Captain and First Officer to access:

  • Command Console: Displays the orders currently active on the ship and controls the bridge's holo-display. Located at the front of the station and the larger of the interfaces.
  • Alert Conditions: Changes the ship's alert condition, changing lighting to indicate to crew their alert state. Located beside the chairs in the central area.

Core Functions

Command Console

The Holo-Display Command Interface

The Command Console is the main console on at the Command Chairs. It is used to manage orders and control the Holo-Display, notably changing its station input. These functions are separated into tabs, provided on the top the the console.

  • Holo-Display: Turns the Holo-Display either On or Off and controls its input station. In current builds, only the Sensors Station can be used to select targets and aid commanding officers with navigation. In future, other bridge stations will provide input.
  • Bridge Orders: Displays and manages orders that have been issued to all bridge stations. These are displayed in a list of each station and can be cancelled from the console.
  • Shipwide Orders: Displays and manages to orders that have been issued shipwide. These are displayed in a list and can be cancelled from the station.

Alert Condition

Alert Condition Controls

The Alert Condition screen changes the ship's alert condition. This changes lighting around the ship and, in future, will affect crew's readiness.

  • Condition Normal: The ship's alert condition is normal and ship crew must attend to their duties as normal. The ship's lighting remains at its default.
  • Yellow Alert: The ship is expecting either a crisis or hostile action, with the crew must be alert. The ship's lighting changes to yellow.
  • Red Alert: The ship is engaging in a crisis or hostile action, with the crew manning emergency stations. The ship's lighting changes to flashing red.
  • Emergency Lighting: The ship's power is redirected to essential systems. The ship's lighting on all decks deactivates and emergency lighting is activated around the ship.
  • Test: Disco Mode: An experimental condition available in Demo Versions. This changes the colour of the lighting to test multi-coloured lighting around the ship.
  • Test: Alien Virus: An experimental condition available in Demo Versions. This causes ship's lighting to flicker, suggesting the ship's systems have been infected with a dangerous computer program.

Development

A original design of the Command Console, then called the "Holo-Display Command Interface"

In Tech Demo 2, the Command Chairs were originally designed only to alter the alert condition of the ship. However, in the patch cycle for Tech Demo 3, the Holo-Display Command Interface was added to control the Holo-Display and alter its targets. Prior to dev build 0.227.0.8, the Command Console was referred to as the Holo-Display Command Interface. The name was changed when the orders system was expanded and management function were added.
