Tutorial:Chairs
NOTICE: This page is a Work in Progress as much of the lore/Development for the game is yet to be established.
Build Compatibility: This tutorial was last verified for Build 0.227.0.8. If you notice discrepancies in a newer version, please update the guide or flag it for review.
This tutorial covers the interaction and usage mechanics of chairs in Starship Simulator. This includes sitting and standing from them, summoning NPCs in stations, and other interaction methods with them.
Overview
A chair is an object designed to be sat on by one person. They are often found at tables, desks and stations where a user is expected to be stationed for long amounts of time. Chairs are often positioned to seat the occupant at eye-level with the object of focus, usually a workstation or recreational activity.
Interaction with a chair is vital for multiple purposes in Starship Simulator. Many stations require the player to sit down to properly access their controls and full functionality. There may also be formal purposes, such as meetings with ship personnel and diplomatic actions. A chair is also used whilst eating meals and recreational activities, allowing the occupant to sit down whilst they interact with their object of focus.
Stationary vs. Mobility
Some chairs are designed to stay at the object they are placed at, therefore are referred to as stationary. Once these are sat at, the occupant (whether it be player or NPC) will only be able to look around to interact with the station it is located at and other nearby objects. Examples of these include those at the Helm Station and Sensors Station on a starship's bridge, and those located on the lower deck of the VIP Lounge.
However, some are designed to be moved around, allowing the occupant to change their position within the area. This can be done for focus purposes, such as avoiding obstacles that block presentations or allowing better interaction with other occupants. However, sometimes these are used for recreation, such as chair racing from one end of a starship with another. These chairs can be taken out of the room and positioned in other areas of the ship.
Basics
Sitting and Standing
The player must be within a metre's distance from the chair to sit in it. To sit, the player must look at it and press the default Interaction Key (default LMB). If successful, the player character will sit in the chair and their perspective will change to from a seated perspective.
To leave a chair, the player must press the Jump Key (default Space Bar). This cause the player character to stand up and leave the chair at its current position. Unless this button is pressed, the character will remain seated indefinitely. The chair will retain the perspective it was in when the player and character left it.
Positioning
Whilst in a chair, the player can move around and change their perspective. This is done by moving the Mouse and looking at other objects. Interaction with technology and other props is possible in a chair, working similar to how it features when the player is standing.
Some chairs are equipped with wheels, allowing them to be moved about by the player whilst they are seated. These can be moved using the Movement Keys (W forward; S backward; A left; D right). This maintains the player's position and changes the location of the chair in the environment. Those without wheels or are attached to the floor (as the case with Bridge Stations and those in the VIP Lounge) cannot be moved around.
Radial Menu
- See: Tutorial:Radial Menu
Chairs at bridge stations can be interacted with via the Radial Menu. This provides an interface for the player to interact with and options available. Currently, whilst chairs are unoccupied, the Radial Menu provides options to either sit in the chair or summon an NPC to man the station. If the chair is occupied, the player is provided either options to command the NPC or dismiss them so that they can take the seat.
To access radial options, look at the chair whilst standing and press the Radial Menu key (default F). Once accessed, the menu will provide interaction options for the chair. The mouse can be moved around freely and hover over the options. To select an option, hover over it and press the interact key (default LMB).
Notes
- In Tech Demos 1 to 3 and dev builds prior to 0.227.0.8, the player would required to press the
Fkey to interact with a chair. This included pressing the key to leave the seat and stand up.
