Tutorial:Multiplayer Basics
This page is a Work in Progress as much of the lore/Development for the game is yet to be established.
Build Compatibility: This tutorial was last verified for Build 0.227.0.8. If you notice discrepancies in a newer version, please update the guide or flag it for review.
This tutorial covers the confirmed basics of the co-operative multiplayer functionality in Starship Simulator, allowing multiple players to crew the same starship. Multiplayer is session based. Functionality is under active development, and details will change.
Joining a Multiplayer Session
To join a multiplayer session, in the game's Main menu click "Multiplayer". This will open the multiplayer menu and will set focus on the "Join " tab by default. A list of all currently online servers available to you will be listed here. Some servers require a password to join. These passwords are set by the server host.
Hosting a Multiplayer Session
To host a multiplayer game, after opening the Multiplayer Menu, click the "Host" tab at the top.
The host of a multiplayer session can manage connected players using a dedicated control panel. Here you can set up your server with a number of options:
- Net Mode: selecting 'Steam' will allow any player on the Steam platform to see your game on the list of available servers, while LAN will be restricted to players within your local area network
- Game Type: this will inform players over whether the intention of your session is to either play as standard gameplay or roleplay, wherein players communicate and act as if they are a real character in the Starship Simulator universe. This choice has no effect on game functionality.
- Max Players: set the maximum number of players that may connect to your server
- Server Name: set a name for your server
- Description: describe your server to inform players of the details of your session
- Password: set an optional password to your server. You will need to share this with any player who you want to join the group.
- NPC Crew: determine whether you want NPC crew members on the player ship
Host Controls
Once in game, the host has several administration functions available. To access the Host Controls menu as host while in-game press F6.
