Battery Rooms

From Starship Simulator

NOTICE: This page is a Work in Progress as much of the lore/Development for the game is yet to be established.

The Battery Rooms are engineering systems located aboard the Magellan-class starships. They are critical components of the ship's power systems, housing large arrays of energy storage cells and distributing them to the starship's systems. These rooms, managed by the engineering department, ensure power stability, provide backup energy, and help manage peak loads across the vessel.

Location and Access

Aboard Magellan-class starships, there are eight dedicated Battery Rooms located within Ring 2 of F Deck. They are distributed symmetrically around the deck, with two rooms situated in each of the ship's four primary sections: Forward, Aft, Port and Starboard. The rooms can currently be accessed via doorways connect to the Ring 2 corridor.

Configuration and Layout

Each of the eight Battery Rooms contains identical equipment:

  • Battery Arrays: Six large Battery Arrays line the walls of each room.
  • Battery Cells: Each Array houses ten individual battery cells. These cells are internally wired as five pairs, with each pair connected in parallel, and the pairs themselves also connected in parallel within the array.
  • Total Capacity: This configuration results in a ship-wide total of 48 Arrays and 480 individual Cells.
  • Monitoring Panels: Each Array is equipped with a monitoring panel displaying key diagnostics for itself and its constituent cells, including:
    • Health / Degradation status
    • Current Charge Level (%)
    • Electrical Load (Power Draw)
    • Charge/Discharge Current
  • Power Specs (Per Array):
    • Input (Charging): ~1 kV @ 50 A (50 kW)
    • Output (Discharging): ~240 V @ 7.2 A (1.728 kW) (Note: These values may be subject to change during development)

Function and Power Network Integration

The Battery Rooms serve multiple vital functions within the ship's power grid:

  • Energy Storage: Their primary role is to store vast amounts of electrical energy generated by the main Fusion Reactor.
  • Backup Power: They provide essential backup power to ship systems in the event the reactor is offline, damaged, or its output is insufficient.
  • Load Balancing: The batteries help stabilize the power grid by absorbing excess power during low demand and supplying extra power during high-demand situations (e.g., charging the Alcubierre Drive for FTL, potential tactical system usage).
  • Power Distribution & Redundancy: The eight rooms are integrated into the power network regionally. The two rooms within a specific ship section (Forward, Aft, Port, Starboard) are typically wired in parallel to power systems within that section. However, critical systems requiring high redundancy, such as the Bridge, the Fusion Reactor complex itself, and likely core Life Support systems (assumption, requires confirmation), are designed to draw power from multiple, if not all four, sections simultaneously.

Engineering Gameplay

Monitoring and maintaining the Battery Rooms falls under the purview of Engineers. Key tasks involve:

  • Regularly checking the monitoring panels in each room to assess array and cell health, charge levels, and power loads.
  • Identifying battery cells that are degraded, failing, or performing below optimal efficiency.
  • Managing charging and discharging cycles to ensure power availability.
  • (Planned) Potentially performing maintenance or replacing failed battery cells to maintain the integrity of the ship's power storage capacity.
