Data Centre

From Starship Simulator

NOTICE: This page is a Work in Progress as much of the lore/Development for the game is yet to be established.

The Data Centre is the central computing core aboard a starship. It houses the primary server hardware, processing units and data storage required for the ship's systems.

Overview

The data centre features each ship's essential systems, such as planetary . It serves as the main data storage area, with all gathered information being saved onto servers housed in the room. If a server or utility in the room goes offline, the relevant ship system will cease functioning and will require repairing.

As the central hub for nearly all information processing and system control, the Data Centre is considered a mission-critical location. Its proper function is vital for navigation, scientific research, and overall ship operation. Damage or malfunction within the Data Centre could potentially cripple major ship functions.

Location and Access

Aboard a Magellan-class vessel, the Data Centre is the central room spanning between B Deck and C Deck. It can be accessed through its lower level on C Deck, with an access door located on the forward side of the room.

Function

The Data Centre serves as the 'brain' of the starship, responsible for:

  • Housing the main computer cores, server racks, and related processing hardware.
  • Performing complex calculations for critical systems like sensor analysis, navigational plotting, and FTL jump calculations.
  • Hosting the physical hardware representation for complex simulations, such as the Galaxy Generation system.
  • Managing ship-wide data storage, including mission logs, scientific data, crew records, and system diagnostics.
  • Supporting the operations of various other ship systems that rely on centralized computing resources.

Development

In pre-patch 0.225 versions, the Magellan-class's Data Centre could be accessed only via a door located on B Deck. This was changed in that patch, possibly due to the realisation that it posed a security risk and B Deck is intended to be accessibly by passengers and delegates.

Notes

  • Current versions of the Data Centre features three boxes marked Galaxy Generation, Texture Generation and SQL Server. These are placeholders for the Galaxy Generation systems, with their function in later patches requiring maintenance in order for these to function.
