Main Crew Lift

The Main Crew Lift is a primary vertical transportation system aboard Magellan-class vessels. They are designed to move personnel efficiently between several of the ship's main decks. The main crew lift is located in the inner-aft region of the ship, typically opposite the inner stairwells on between B Deck and F Deck.

The Main Crew Lift is a significant installation, situated in the central ring of the ship, opposite the main stairwell. It provides access to and from:

Call buttons are located on each of these decks, allowing crew to summon the lift.

Features

  • Lift Car: A cabin designed to transport multiple crew members.
  • Call Buttons: External buttons on Decks B through F used to call the lift to the current deck (Build 0.225.0.42).
  • Deck Selection Panel: An interface located inside the lift car, allowing passengers to select their desired destination deck (Build 0.225.0.42).
  • Curved Doors: The lift features both interior and exterior doors that are designed to move along a curved track. This design approach may be used for other doors on curved walls throughout the ship (Build 0.225.0.42, 0.225.0.43).
  • Magnetic Rail System: The lift run on a magnetic rail system to perform in 0-1 G environments. (Dev Stream 2025-05-18)

Operation

Using the Main Crew Lift involves:

1.  Pressing a call button on a serviced deck to summon the lift.
2.  Entering the lift car once the doors open.
3.  Using the internal deck selection panel to choose the destination deck.
4.  The lift then travels to the selected deck, and the doors open to allow egress.

Development History

The Main Crew Lift has seen significant development and refinement:

  • Made fully functional with call buttons (Decks B-F) and an internal deck selection panel in Build 0.225.0.42.
  • WIP interior door that opens along a curve added in Build 0.225.0.42.
  • New interior and exterior doors, moving on a curved track, were modeled in Build 0.225.0.43.
  • The lift was moved closer to the wall framework in Build 0.225.0.43, which also caused some geometry clipping issues that were planned to be fixed on a per-deck basis.
  • Textures warping inside the lift when it moves were fixed in Build 0.225.0.43.
  • Player collision issues around the main crew lift area were addressed in Build 0.225.0.56.
  • UI screens on the lift were fixed in Build 0.225.0.62.
  • The ship's Framework around the main crew lift shaft was updated to properly align segments and remove penetrating geometry in Build 0.225.0.72.
  • Functionality of lift buttons for clients in multiplayer was fixed in Build 0.225.0.74 and 0.225.0.75.
  • Network settings (net settings) for the lift were tweaked for multiplayer performance in Build 0.225.0.77.
  • The logic for elevator operations was update to stop doors closing and trapping players Build 0.255.0.101
